Basic Automobile Maintenance

Cars trucks and motorcycles need some attention too!

Basic maintenance is important to prolong the life of any vehicle. If your prized set of wheels isn’t taken care of properly, it can end up having a lot of issue in the long run that could have been avoided by taking simple steps. In order to help your vehicle stay running longer, Mechanics Discount has put together a list of steps to help.
Here are a few things you don’t want to miss:
Oil change
A vehicle needs an oil change at least every 3,000 miles. If you have a higher mileage car, a synthetic oil blend might be the best for your engine.
Tires
Check your tire pressure every month since tires can lose air due to fluctuating outdoor temperatures. Rotating tires every 6,000 miles is recommended to prevent uneven wear. If your tires are wearing out unevenly, it might be time for an alignment.
Transmission fluid
It is recommended that transmission fluid is changed at least every 30,000 miles. It also is beneficial to monitor your ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and check the level during oil changes.
Power steering fluid
Power steering fluid can last up to 50,000 miles before it needs to be changed.

Engine coolant
Older engine coolant formulas should be replaced every 30,000 miles; however, the newer formulas can last up to 50,000 miles.
Brakes and Brake fluid
Replacing brakes depends on how often you use them, as well as the driving conditions. When brakes need to be replaced you will often hear squeaking or vibrations. Monitor brake fluid.

Fuel filter
Replace the fuel filter once a year to prevent fuel line clogs.
 Air Filter
Air filters should be replaced every 12,000 – 15,000 miles. Replacing the filter will help gas mileage and reduce emissions.
Windshield Wipers and wiper fluid
Replace wiper blades when rubber becomes worn and rain smears on windshield, instead of wiping away. Washer fluid may have to be refilled once per month, depending how often it is used.
Headlights and brake lights
During each oil change, it doesn’t hurt to ask the mechanics test the lights for you. If any of your lights are out, replace immediately to prevent accidents.

Keeping up with your car maintenance can save you many costly repairs for many rides to come!
